Patient resting after a physiotherapy session in Marrakech

You come out of a session feeling drained, as if after a big effort — sometimes even more tired than when you arrived. Rest assured: passing tiredness after a physiotherapy session is common, and most often it is a sign that the body is working.

Here is why physio makes you tired, what is normal, and the signs that deserve a call. To prepare for and extend your sessions, also read our preparation and aftercare guide.

Why does physio make you tired?

Muscle effort. Strengthening, stretching, joint rehabilitation: the exercises demand energy, especially when muscles work again after a period of inactivity.

The repair response. After a session, the body repairs and reorganises: this mild inflammatory response is part of the healing process, and it costs energy.

Concentration. Learning a new movement, correcting a posture, coordinating your breathing: rehabilitation also demands attention, and mental fatigue is felt physically.

Relaxation. When tensions release, the body switches to recovery mode: a feeling of heaviness or drowsiness after the session is common, and it passes with rest.

⚠ Good to know

Contact the centre or your doctor if tiredness comes with fever, an unusual pain that gets worse, or if it does not pass after a few days of rest.

What can you do to recover better?

Rest, drink water and practise the gentle stretches advised during the session. Avoid intense effort for the rest of the day: recovery is part of the treatment.

If tiredness is too intense from one session to the next, tell the practitioner: the programme can be adjusted to your pace. Tiredness that sets in is never a reason to stop without talking about it — it is useful information for adapting the treatment.
