Sciatica in Marrakech
Sciatica is pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve: it starts in the lower back, crosses the buttock and travels down the back of the leg, sometimes to the foot. It can come with tingling, numbness or a burning sensation.
At Elite Physio Centre, in Guéliz, everything starts with an assessment to identify the origin of the nerve irritation, followed by an adapted, progressive physiotherapy programme. Sessions last 45 minutes, by appointment only.
Typical signs of sciatica
- Sharp, shooting or burning pain along the leg, often on one side only
- Tingling or numbness in the leg or the foot
- Pain worsened by prolonged sitting, coughing or effort
- Weakness or difficulty in certain leg movements
- Pain starting in the lower back and crossing the buttock
What irritates the sciatic nerve?
- A herniated disc compressing the nerve root — the most frequent cause
- Irritation or inflammation around the nerve
- Deep muscle tension in the buttock area (piriformis muscle)
- Prolonged postures and repeated back efforts
- Natural wear of the discs and back joints
Care at the centre
The assessment pinpoints the origin of the pain and its effect on your leg. Rehabilitation work is then adapted to what your nerve tolerates, and progresses at your pace.
- Gentle manual techniques to relieve pain and release tension
- Progressive therapeutic exercises: mobility of the back and leg, adapted strengthening
- Concrete advice: positions to favour, activities to maintain or temporarily avoid
- Regular follow-up of pain and sensitivity, with the same practitioner
In most cases, it is better to stay as active as possible rather than stay in bed: your practitioner will show you the movements adapted to your situation.
⚠ Warning signs
See a doctor urgently if you notice a clear loss of strength in the leg or foot, urinary or bowel problems, or numbness in the perineal area.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a prescription for sciatica care?
Most often yes: rehabilitation is provided on prescription, which is also required for reimbursement. Bring recent examinations (MRI, CT scan) if you have them — they help pinpoint the origin of the pain.
Should I rest completely?
No, in most cases: strict, prolonged rest delays recovery. The assessment defines the positions and movements adapted to your situation, then you gradually resume your activities.
How long does a session last?
Each session lasts 45 minutes, with assessment time during the first visit.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your case and your progress: the number is often set by the prescription, then reassessed as you improve — with no unnecessary sessions.
What is the link between sciatica and a herniated disc?
A herniated disc is the most frequent cause of sciatica: the disc bulges and presses on the nerve root. The assessment at the centre, together with your examinations, pinpoints the exact origin of your pain — see also our page dedicated to the herniated disc.
